Seniors Eleanor Godley THE YINTAGE YEARS AS IF you didn’t have enough to do, what with getting things ready for Christmas and putting the geraniums under wraps finally and learning to oe a do- cent at the local museum and _ practis- ing your tai chi and preparing your next presentation to Speech Craft. As if that wasn’t more than enough, here’s that woman who writes for old people going on about in hand-to-hand combat with interest to you, it will leave that mark in very definite form. It will be important, both to you, while you're doing it, and to your family and/or friends when it’s a fait accompli. The idea is that you write your life story. Ahhh, c’mon, | can hear you muttering to yourself. But I’m serious, a lot of people are already doing it, and the satisfaction is im- mense when you hold the finished product and under- stand its value. No, not that kind of value, nobody’s going to pay you fer it, but your children and their children will be ever glad you took the trouble. And so will you. A cordless Christmas i've had one in my hands for the last couple of wecks. Margaret Paynter, a member of the Brock House Life-Write group, was kind enough to lend me her last remaining copy, so I could enjoy it, of course, but so | could tell you about it, about how it was done and what pleasure and sense of fulfillment she’s had from it. In a way it’s a sort of closing the circle, of know- ing real satisfaction. You see, there’s this course available, overseen by a couple of chaps from the Department cf English at UBC. I am assumiag that Dr. Sid Butler and Dr. Ronald Jchnson invented the course, as they are responsible for giving it at the university and at Brock House seniors centre as well, There is also a branch,(a chapter?),in Burnaby, and now there's going to be a similar branch on the North Shore. Elder coHlege will be of- fering it come the new year. Kate McCandless, who lives on this shore and is one of Dr. Butler’s gradu- ates, will be in charge from the start of the new semester in January some time to its May conclusion. Dates will be announced shortly. Right now you’re think- ing ‘‘teoo much work.” You’re thinking of piles of paper and piles of words INCREDIBLE NEW LOW and your heart sinks at the drudgery of marrying then. But that’s why this course has been designed, to both simplify and soften the tedious chore of long stret- ches of writing by exploiting the pleasure each of us has in relating anecdotes from our lives. They may be something funny — “Say, PH tcli you what happened to me once” Or something very serious, or dramatic, or sad, but each is indelible in the mind, each can be readily recalled (and sometimes jazzed up a Cit) and that is how your life-write devel- ops. Your book is anec- dotal, episodic. See Life page 42 Save 20 492°. This year, give the freedom of a 10-chasnet cordless phone. Well, it isn’t who I think you are, it’s what I know you are. You’re tough — we’re all tough, all us seniors, we’ve been in hand-to-hand combat with life for a long time. ’ The only thing that fazes us now is dirty pool. So another proposition for what’s left of your leisure time will be welcome to many of you. If that time seems to be shrinking, all the more important that we cram in all we’re capable of. We have to leave our mark on the sands of, after all. And this won’t just be an PRICE! TurboGrafx-16 video system Features 16-bit sound and graphy ics.
