By A.P. McCredie News Reporter tt is a sentiment that crosses all cultural, geographical and age boundaries. In verse and story- telling throughout the ages, the candle burning in the window has come to symbolize the longing for home. For many of today’s aged, the fonging to [ve independently in one’s own home is as strong as the longings of fictional characters of lore. Mumtaz Mohamed has repre- sented that candle burning in the window for 93-year-old Evelyn Horne since 1979, Mohamed visits Horne once a week for three hours, helping with the weekly laundry, doing a little cleaning and vacuuming and assisting in chores that Horne has trouble doing. Though after visiting with the North Vancouver resident of 74 years, one comes away with a feeling that there is little she can’t do. A hip operation five years ago — her third — has slowed her down a bit, she admits, but Horne still manages a daily routine of walking the halls of her apartment complex, exercising her body and her mind. “There are some things I can’t Shades 0 % LEVOLOR® OFF sugg. retail da, fike vacuuming and going down to the laundry room,’* said Horne. Without the aid of Mohamed, a home support worker with the North Shore Home Support Ser- vices Society, Horne said she would probably he living in a more structured elderly home sit- uation. Mohamed, the great-grand- mother of 13 knows, represents a link to her independence and has helped her stay in her apartment with a beautiful view of Van- couver’s inner harbor. And likewise, Horne’s strength and will are a constant source of inspiration for Mohamed. “She is really quite remark- able,’’ said Mohamed. ‘‘She doesn’t know what a headache is. She has never taken aspirin in her life. “T enjoy visiting her so much because | learn so many different things from her and her life expe- ciences.’’ Horne was Mohamed’s first client, and remains one of her favorites.
