Dear Editor: As far. back as August 1988, your paper published a visionary News Viewpoint editorial dealing with the escalating traffic prob- lems in the recCentre Lonsdale and courthouse area. The piece stated that in keeping with the public-use facilities of this area, the city must make the traffic pat- terns fit the facilities, not have the facilities, their users and area res- idents fit in with an ill-considered commuter-route traffic situation. While speeding traffic barrelling through this public-use is an everyday occurrence, it caused a very chaotic and dangerous scenario on May 24 and 25 during the recent Festival of the Arts. The 100-block East 23rd was advertised in the Jocal press as be- Pregnant shouldn’t Dear Editor: Catherine Atyeo, in her article, “Pregnancy police on patrol,’* seems reluctant to acknowledge the fact that a pregnant woman, in making decisions about her own body has also to think of the body of the child she is carrying in her womb. Decisions to smoke or drink af- fect not just her, but also her un- born child, and although the Supreme Court has ruled that the unborn child is not a person, anyone with any common sense knows that it is and that it has the right to be protected from abuse ~— including the ultimate abuse of abortion. MAILBOX Lonsdale recCentre traffic chaotic ing closed to traffic from noon, May 23 to 6 p.m. May 25. By noon, May 24, the road was open again with festival goers dodging cars to cross 23rd Street to reach certain events. On inquiry, the city engineering dept. stated they had opened the road again in the middle of the festival because the complaint was made that traffic was passing around the barricades to access Lonsdale. Who is to be given iirst con- sideration? The taxpayers and participants who use these premises for their business or rec- reation or the commuting motorists who have a highway one and a half blocks north? It is time the city engineering dept. realized that pedestrian safe- women smoke That is why even she admits to fecling extreme revulsion at the sight of a pregnant woman smok- ing — because she cares about the health of the baby, as well as the mother. I think we all have a responsi- vility to educate others concerning the damage that a child in’ the womb can suffer as a result of the ingestion of harmful substances. Provided this is done with charity, ft think parents would welcome the attempt to ensure the birch of a healthy baby. J. Mae Morris North Vancouver ty must take precedence over vehicular convenience at any time and most emphatically in a recre- ation-oriented area. Other Lower Mainland municipalities plan traf- fic patterns ta avoid oar severely curtail traffic in high-use people areas as a matter of policy! why is this not so in the City of North Vancouver? The city engineers and planners must establish an acceptable plan for this area which contains the rec centre, the courthouse, the Al- liance Church and a_ well- established residential neighborhood. At all times of the day many joggers, walkers and cyclists move through the area because of the green space further east with fine views over the city. Sunday, July 21, 1991 - North Shore News - 7 ‘The Folkfest, First Nite and the Arts Festival activities clearly in- dicate that the city needs an open air plaza with surrounding facili- ties in which to hold these events and the rec centre is it! The com- muter traffic must be encouraged to use the highway to make the area safer and a whole lot more pleasant for all of us.
