Suspicious fire FIRE DESTROYED a sports car parked in an under- ground lot early Sunday morning. North Vancouver City Fire Department officials have yet lo determine the cause of the fire. But a fice depart- ment spokesman said the fire ‘‘appears to be suspicious,’ Firefighters were called to an apartment building at 145 St. Georges Ave. just after 2:30 a.m. The fire ac- tivated an automatic sprinkle system. As a result, fire damage was restricted to a 1974 MGB convertible sports car. A car parked beside the MGB sustained misor damage from the heat of the fire. Fraud sentenced A 33-YEAR-OLD Surrey man was sentenced May 20 in North Vancouver provincial court to six months in jail for iusurance fraud. Appearing before Judge Doug Moss, Phu Nguyen Le pleaded guilty to defrauding the London Life Insurance Co. of $14,444.76 between Jan. 1 and June 30, 1990 by making false applications for commissions on various insurance policies, The court ordered Le to compensate the insurance company for the entire sum. Le was also placed on probation for three years. Environment discussed NORTH SHORE residents are invited to speak to the B.C. By Patrick Raynard Contributing Writer “I’m looking forward to work- ing with them, and with parents, to provide quality programs at Hillside that continue to meet the unique needs of mid-level stu- dents.’’ West Vancouver District 45 School Board confirmed Monday that Hicks, who has been prin- cipal of Westcot Elementary for the last three years, will be the new Hillside principal. During Hicks’ Westcot tenure, the school was accredited by the ministry of education, whose team of educators ‘‘commended the staff for excellent school organization, commitment to teamwork, strong emphasis on lit- erature-based reading instruction, enhancement of the appreciation of multiculturalism, and integra- tion of students with special needs,”" district administrator Ron Knight told the North Shore News. Hicks, a teacher and ad- ministrator in both West and North Vancouver for the past 13 years, has worked at both the elementary and middle levels and has been involved with community education, French immersion, Programme Cadre de Francais, co-operative education and special education programs, Knight said. WEST VANCOUVER SCHOOL BOARD WARREN HICKS, the recently-appoinied principal of Hillside Middie School. Hicks, who holds a Master of Education Administration from the University of B.C., has taken a special interest in native peoples’ education at the university and has acted as an external evaluator for the Ts’Kei graduate program. In the past year, Hicks has served as vice-president and president-elect of the West Van- couver Administrators’ Associa- tion, which he represents at the provincial fevel, and has served as a member of the West Vancouver School Board bargaining team.
