Wilkinson. ‘People actually need
these gardens."" She notes that
both shoppers and shopkeepers

The garden is also a popular
destination for community groups
and wedding parties.

“We get five to ten weddings
every Saturday," says Wilkinson.
“Some of them just show up, but

BONSAI PEOPLE on the North
Shore will be holding a viewing of
Bonsai art on Saturday, Sept. 15
and Sunday, Sept. 16 at the North
Vancouver Recreation Centre
from 10 am. to 4 p.m. Willy
Takahashi and Roy Harada will
be on hand to demonstrate and
answer questions.

More than any other form of
horticulture, Bonsai combines
nature with art. Bon means pot or
tray, while Sai means ‘to plant.”
There is an art in pruning a tree
so that its life is prolonged and
also in shaping a tree so that, in
its decorative pot, it is always
pleasing to the eye.

The further ingredient of
miniaturization of a plant that in
the wild would normally reach 100
metres, is further proof of the
skill required of this art.

Bonsai is an ancient hobby
practised first by the imperial
courts in China dating back to 265
- 420 AD. The first collections of
Bonsai to be exhibited in Europe
appeared at the World Exhibition
in Paris in 1878 and again in 1909
in London.

There are now many clubs in
the U.S. and Canada.

Garden lecture set

THE DR. Sun Yat-Sen Classical
Chinese Garden at 578 Carrail St.,
Vancouver, will present a lecture
and slide presentation by Pro-
fessor Frances Ya-sing Tsu on
Wednesday, Sept. 19, at 7:30 p.m.

Professor Frances Ya-sing Tsu
was born in Shanghai, China. She
graduated from the St. John’s
University and Tongji University,
Shanghai. Later, she taught at the
Tongji University until 1982. From
1982-84, Professor Tsu visited the
College of Architecture, Universi-
ty of Nebraska-Lincoln as a
visiting professor. From 1985-86,
she was appointed as the campus
architect for the Union College at
Lincoln, Nebraska.

Professor Tsu's specialty is in
the area of landscaped architec-
ture and housing design.

There are also what Wilkinson
calls the ‘old mers.” peaple who
came to the gardens in the 1970s
when they first opened and con-
tinue to visit. “it’s only two and
a quarter acres so it’s easy to wilh
as an exercise routine. We know a
lot of them really well. They
come, like in the old days, to
stroll.**

Wilkinson points out that Park
and Tilford Garden is not like
some of the other gardens around
Vancouver. It features a European
design with a more formal struc-
ture, rather than the looser plant-
ing that many people are used to.
The pathway and hedge give
structure to an abundance of in-

formal planting.

The garden is divided into dif-
ferent rooms which inchide rose,
Oriental) native, woodland, her-
baccous, perennial and patio
displays. “By dividing it up you
see citch of these Ubings individu-
ally. so you walk in and out of
different styles. This way you can
get away with intricate plantings,”’
Wilkinson explains.

Wilkinson hopes that more
North Shore residents will
discover or rediscover what one
survey respondent described as ‘a
gift of peace in the midst of
chaos.**
