34 - Friday, April 27. AT THE height of the spring with tulips, daffodils and other bulb flowers in full bloom, it's hard to think about planting their sum- mer-flowering cousins. However, if you want to have these outstand- ing beauties in your garden and on your balcony, too, it’s time to begin. Spring bulbs have the advantage of less competition from other flowering plants so early in the year. Yet the summer bulbs do stack up well against other plants. They should be planted in late spr- ing to compete successfully in col- or with the annuals, perennials and late-flowering shrubs, all of which bloom into the fall, until frost strikes again. Some summer-blooming bulbs are already well established in Ca- nadian gardens. A recent survey shows that 61 per cent of respon- dents grow dahlias. One reason for their popularity is undoubtedly the long flowering time, from July through October, in most cases. Other than tuberous begonias, nothing blooms longer. Of course, a second advantage of dahlia is the wide array of flower shapes, colors and heights available — from 25 cm (10 in.) to two metres (six ft.). All of them make excellent cut flowers. There’s one for every area: borders, beds and outdoor containers. Give them lots of room to grow if planting pots. Tuberous begonias flower for as long a period as dahlias. They prefer soil somewhat rich in humus and can make do with relatively little light. As a bedding and edg- ing plant, they are virtually unrivalled and they thrive in out- door containers. Choose from large- and small-flowered varieties in a wide range of colors such as yellow, white, pink, red and orange. There are also beautiful two-colored varieties, as well as some with double and/or fringed petals. When planting begonias, ensure that the tubers are covered with a layer of soil only one to two cen- timetres (one-half to one inch) thick. During dry spells, water them conscientiously. Another summer-flowering bulb that is grown by many Canadians — including 67 per cent of the survey respondents — is the gladiolus. Most people grow them for cutting because they have a All China 25% off Rosenthal Thomas Dansk Fitz & Floyd AO pc. set (8 x 5 pe. place setting) plus 5 pce. serving set reg. $265.00 All on sale for $179°° Windsong GIFT STUDIOS 982 Marine Drive One bia wentot Sears Parking in deat 980-1293 _ BRIDAL REGISTRY 1990 - North Shore News Now’s the time to plant summer bulbs DAHLIAS, TUBEROUS BEGONIAS, GLADIOLUS ADD COLOR TO GARDENS AND BALCONIES tong vase life and fook stunning in home and office arrangements.
