Proximity, atmosphere reasons why businesses locate on N. Shore A MASORITY / businesses responding to a recent survey ask- ing why they located on the North Shore said the ‘‘relaxed, pleasant atmosphere”’ made it their number one choice, according to a consul- tant hired by the North Shore Economic Development Commis- sion. By CORINNE BJORGE Contributing Writer Ramona Materi also said most of the businesses she interviewed dealt with computer software, and a majority of the businesses were started on the North Shore so the residents could work close to their own homes, she reported during her Monday night presentation to North Vancouver City Council. Materi said one of her biggest surprises while conducting the survey was finding the quality of businesses operating out of the North Shore. “A lot of them export to world-wide markets,’ she said. But she said the businesses also reported that land and rental space on the North Shore was difficult to find, and too expensive. Several said transportation and bridge problems were their biggest headaches. Materi said that one business owner complained ‘‘it’s just one day-long traffic jam.”’ The problems on the North Shore may be severe enough for some of the businesses to relocate, according to Materi, and of the 40 firms she intervieved, 28 of them said they were thinking of relocating in the next five years, and twenty-one of these firms were thinking of relocating off the North Shore. But Economic Development of- ficer Bonnie Pyplacz said since the purpose of the survey was to help the Commission determine how to proceed with an economic strategy, the information from the survey may help find ways to convince these firms to stay on the North Shore. Pyplacz said a perceived lack of land and rental space might be ad- dressed by marketing strategies which match up land-owners with businesses that want to expand.
