Van athiete swims in Seoul NORTH VANCOUVER swimmer Lee Grenon is in Seoul, South Korea, today competing with 27 other disabled B.C. athletes for the 1988 Paralympics. Marking his third Paralympics —- he was a member of Canada’s 1980 and 1984 teams — Grenon expects to swim to 2 top spot in his strongest race, butterfly. Swimming first with North Vancouver’s Chena Swim Club 2nd most recently with the UBC Masters Club, the visually impaired swimmer is ranked first in Canada for a number of races; his world rankings range from second to fourth. A graduate student in sociology at UBC, Grenon, 24, also hopes to improve his showings in freestyle, backstroke and individual mediey competition. “Our B.C. contingent is enthusiastic, world-class and ready," said Jim Marvel, executive director of the B.C. Blind Sports and Recreation Association. ‘‘Realistically...Canada should place within the top six nations.’’ Using the same facilities that played host to the Olympics Sept. 17 to Oct. 2, the Paralympics will see disabled athletes from 84 countries compete. Owls fly to soccer victory THE NORTH Shore Owls girts under-15 metro soccer team again won the recent Dunbar Invitational Tournament, marking a third consecutive title. In four games, the Owls allowed just one goal, with Erin Bell, Heather Bews, Theresa Paimer, Andrea Watkins and Daphne Wendt scoring for the locals. In the final, Susan Sutherland saved a penalty kick as the Owls edged the Coquitlam Mavericks 1-0 to capture the top spot in the annua! tournament. Blues unplug Superstars THE CAPILANO College Biues men’s basketball squad opened its season over the weekend with a 111-92 win over the Superstars, a senior men’s team. Rick Willet was the Capilano team’s tep shooter with 21 points that game; foliowing closely was Richard Otter with 16 points and eight rebounds. “The kids looked pretty good,’’ said coach Neil Chester, whe for this first game played his entire roster. ‘‘I think we’re going to have a good year.”’ The Blues men take on UVic’s junior varsity squad Oct. 21 be- fore meeting the coliege’s grad team the next night.
