Housing sales to
reach record levels

THE VANCOUVER Real
Estate Forecast, released
recently by Canada Mor-
tgage and Housing Corpora-
tion, projects a record sales
level in 1988 and 1989.

MLS sales are forecast to
reach the highest levels ever
despite house price increases
averaging 18 per cent in 1988
and 14 per cent in 1989. A
strong local economy and
increased net migration are
creating #n increase in hous-

ing demand.

MLS residential sales are
forecast at 35,000 units in
1988, an increase of 16 per
cent over the 1987 level of
30,915 unit sales. In 1989,
sales are projected to in-
crease by a further 7 per cent
to 38,500 units.

Sales in 1988 will increase
in most of Vancouver, Bur-
naby, and New Westminster.
It is expected that sales
growth patterns will shift in

1989, with greater increases
in more outlying
municipalities.

Residential construction is
also forecast to reach record
high levels in 1988 and 1989.
The forecast is for 20,200
units in 1988, and 21,000
units in 1989. Last year there
were 19,515 housing starts in
the Lower Mainland.

The average MLS residen-
tial price is forecast to in-
crease by 18 per cent.
