IT TOOK me a long time to decide to do it. For quite some time I’ve been pon- dering the idea of getting a serious haircut. ; I'm obsessed with my hair, | wash.it every day, always brush it, and run my hands through it. The thought of chopping off the. length, which [’d been working to grow for some years, kind of scared me, ; I did finally . decide, after numerous nights without sleep, to go through with it. I went into the shop, with beads of. sweat rolling duwn my cheeks, - and.got the back and sides under- ~cut. | looked at the big clumps of hair on the floor and all 1 could think was ‘‘My hair!”’ When I finally got the courage to look into the mirror, 1 was’ ac- tually impressed with the result. Many people didn’t even notice I’d had it done. I still don’t know what drove me to do it. What makes people so concern- ed with their hair? Is it really that important? - 8.B., 17: ‘I-thought hair was just ‘there to keep your head warm.” : Hair is hair and nothing more. {t doesn’t always determine your personality like some people belicve, and it certainly doesa’t enhance o1 take away from it in ‘any. way. Many hairstyles create stereotypes. _For example, if a guy has long hair people tend to stereotype him as a rocker, even if he’s into rap, and vice versa. Sure, to be effective as a pillar of society, a police officer must look respectable. But does the length of someone’s hair really make them less respectable? If Premier Mike Harcourt were to grow out his hair (something I bet he’d love to do), would his job be any less important? He'd still be the same guy he was be- fore, just with a different look. Do you think you are being short-changed? Do you think schools have more special programs than they need? gi vita E NO dime wi Last week we asked if young offenders should be punished as harshly as adults, and if their names should be made public. t definitely think they should get rid of the Young Offenders Act. It sounds like a pretty pood idea to keep the kids’ names out of the paper when’ they commil a crime because they are kids, but kids ore slacking off. They should abolish it. There is no reason why two 10-year-olds _need to kill a little innocent boy; there is no reason why somebody needs to be stabb- ed 15 times in the back. Kids are killing. themselyes and each other. J say publish their names, to hell with the Young Offenders Act. Young offenders’ names should be published because most kids who commit crimes do it to be cool and maybe we should wake them up to realize that it’s not cool, Ut would, msybe, embarass them’ a hit if. their names where published. The Young QOffenders Act is a huge ‘joke. It needs to be changed if we want to curb the violence because a jot of it is being done by the teens, knowing that the Young Offenders Act is a really big joke. And that’s just a few of them. So if you have any thoughts rolling around under that mop on top about getting something done with it, it may just be a rather hair-raising experience to go out and get it cut. Some people spend hours get- ting ready to go out, and half of that time may be devoted com- pletely to their hair. The perfect image seems to be what most are concerned with. People try to cover up for their hair if it doesn’t look fantastic. Quite often, I’ve heard, ‘I’m’ having a bad hair day," and [ can-sympathize.
