EXPO’S campaign slogan What the World is Coming To took on a new meaning for visitors to the fair’s travelling exhibit at Park Royal Shopping Centre Tuesday. Many of the guests at the of- ficial exhibit opening noticed van- dals had stolen the Expo banner and a flag from B.C.’s Mobile Pa- vilion. The pavilion is parked outdoors, adjacent to Woodward's Food Floor. Security personnel were on site at the time, but vandals succeeded Monday evening in cutting down the welcoming banner, which was bolted to a wooden board above the pavilion entrance. The outdoor mobile pavilion has been vandalized once before dur- ing its promotional travels in the interior of B.C. But organizers said they didn’t expect any problems in West Van- couver. ‘““We were lucky. They tried to break in by kicking the door and there’s a couple of hundred-thou- sand dollars worth of equipment in there — projectors, computers and robotic arms,”’ said one employee, who asked not to be named. $30,000 WORTH John Stubbs, manager of the province’s Mobile Pavilion, said the robotic equipment alone is worth $30,000. He added the West Vancouver preview show was a_ success, despite the vandalism, attracting about 300 people. “The goal we really want to ac- complish is getting the word out to the province,’’ Stubbs said. ‘‘Since May we've visited 18 communities. We pretty well blanketed the pro- vince.” . In West Vancouver and other Lower Mainland locations, the B.C. Mobile Pavilion is being seen in combination with the provincial government’s indoor travelling ex- hibit. Tour co-ordinator Shawn Robins said when the travelling exhibit ends in April about 1,000,000 people will have seen the show. SHOPPERS ATTRACTED He said the mails are a good location to host the exhibit because of space requirements and the large number of people shopping centres attract. A highlight of the indoor exhib- it, said Robins, is a small-scale model of the Expo site. He said information staff will be available, throughout the exhibit’s week-long stay on the North Shore, to answer questions.’ Robins said another popular display is Bob the bus driver who talks to viewers about the B.C. Transit system in a unique audio- visual display. “It’s really quite a dramatic display, which uses a Disney tech- nique of rear screen projection. People stand there for the longest time and we always get asked whether or not he’s real,’’ he said. A 20-minute film is shown every | half hour, dealing specifically with what visitors can expect to see at the B.C. Pavilion.
