Evolution of conditioners

WHEN HAIR conditioners
emerged in the early 1960s,
they were called ‘creme
rinses’’,

The desired hair look was
long and straight and a. ma-
jor problem was tangles.
Creme rinses smoothed the
hair shafts so they didn’t get
caught on each other when
in contact.

Additional benefits from
creme rinses were reduced
static buildup because of less
friction; better shine because
of improved light reflection
from the smoother shaft;
and better manageability of
the hair.

“Conditioners” evolved in
the 705, when the hair
received punishment from
perming and coloring, hot-

air blow dryers and heated ©

curling irons and brushes,
Conditioners were for-
mulated to be more thera-
peutic than creme rinses:
they were rich and helped to
revitalize the hair. But some
were too heavy and greasy,
weighing the. hair down and
acting as ‘‘dirt magnets."*
The next generation sur-
faced in the late 70s and ear-
ly 80s: lighter “instant”
conditioners intended to ad-
dress the problems of
heaviness and greasiness.
Some of these products
went too far the other way,
