SEPTEMBER is the time to
sign up for new activities.

Pre-schoolers, from
newborns to four year olds,
and their parents are ready
for new experiences and in-
terests after the lazy, hazy
days of summer.

One way to satisfy this
need is to visit the nearest
family drop-in centre, spon-
sored by North Shore Family
Services. All drop-in centres
re-opened in the second
week of September.

For the children, the cen-
tre offers a quality creative
play program which con-
tributes to healthy all round
development. There is the
intellectual stimulation of
arts and crafts, singing and
storytime while the children
learn to socialize during ac-
tivities such as free play and
snack time.

The children also have
fun, ‘exercising their large
muscles, on equipment such
as slides and bicyles. Free
play is a most important part
of children’s emotional and
social development, giving
them the opportunity for
creative, imaginative and
peer sharing experiences.

The playroom program
offers to parent and child
the important steps to in-
dependence.

Knowing their children are
in the capable hands of the

playroom staff, parents can
relax in an adjoining room.
Apart from chatting to
friends, parents have an op-
portunity to share child rear-
ing experiences or listen to
talks on related subjects such
as nutrition and sibling ri-
valry.

This family program relies
heavily on volunteer help.
This includes parent con-
tributions such as preparing
coffee, choosing topics for

speakers and welcoming

give to helping families with
young children, are asked to

at North Shore Family Ser-
