BACK to basics. An attitude
that more and more women
are assuming towards
fashion.

Designers are giving them
what they want, too: mono-
chromatic colors, un-
cluttered, flattering and ut-
terly wearable clothes.

Great jewellery designers
understand this need and_are
creating beautiful diamond
brooches and clasps with
clean, strong lines, unlike the
rather heavy and ornate
pieces that were made long
ago.

The early history of dia-
mond pins still holds many
mysteries. It is known that
long before women were ever
allowed to wear diamonds,
men of high rank fastened
“diamond pins to their cloaks
and tunics prior to battle for
protection, as it was believed
that the diamonds “wauld
dispel fear and make ‘the
wearer courageous.

Diamond -pins were also
worn as badges’ of rank.
Charlemangne was buried at
Aachen in 814 with a chest
full of treasures that included
a brooch containing four
large diamonds in _ their
natural octahedron shape.

It wasn’t until the 17th cen-
tury that new diamond cut-
ting techniques were
developed and as a result of
their added brilliance, dia-
mond pins became very
popular.

New and elaborate designs,
as well as processes and tech-
niques, would be developed
throughout the next two hun-
dred years. By the 20th cen
tury, the design of the dia-
mond pin as a true art form
was firmly established.

working in ‘Paris at the time.
Painters and sculptors such
as Alexander Calder,
Georges Braque, Jean
Cocteau and Salvador Dali
also became involved in
jewellery design, leaving
