Festival of the arts opens in Pentic- ton Wednesday, May 16 at 4:00 p.m. with Dido and the Hand People, a conga-percussionist group from the Lower Mainland, leading a procession to the Peach Bowl Convention Centre. Competitors in music and dance will also perform from May 16 to 19 with approx- imately 200 competitors bet- ween the ages of 8 and 35 expected. As well, there will be a display of up to 500 visual arts selections, chosen by jury in regional competitions. The visual arts display, spon- sored by the Association of B.C. Arts Council, will be housed in the newly-created Art Emporium from May 13 to 21. Three daily workshops in areas such as’ dance, mime and movement, mask, will be offered for both students and the public by the Association of Drama Educators. The Adult Com- munity Theatre groups will have a public adjudication after each production with a coffee critique the next morn- Included in the procession will be Skywalk, an award winning Pacific Coast jazz band; Constantine Darling, a choreographer, jazz and break dancer and Penticton’s Terpsicord Dance Company. An evening Bar-B-que followed by speeches by dignataries and the story of Penticton as told in a perfor- mance of ‘‘Ogopogo Myth’’ which was written specifically for the Festival, will complete the official opening ceremonies. It is estimated that over 3500 people, 1500 of whom will be competitors in dance, - music, drama and the visual arts, will converge on this south Okanagan city for the four-day Festival which is funded by the B.C.
