But despite mechanical problems, the promising racer finished in the front pack and now ranks fifth overall in the series. In the Sunday race, in front of 10,000 fans, Clifford finished a credible fourth despite being gridded in last position. He failed to post a qualifying time because of mechanical problems. In moving from last to fourth place, Clifford driving his 1982 Van Diemen — set the fastest time of the weekend, half a second off the track record. Top three finishers were Dave Knapp and _ Bob Lobenburg of California and John Stephanus of Seattle. All four drivers are competing in the Northwest Region to qualify for the American Formula Ford Championship in Atlanta this October. Only the top six series finishers are allowed to compete in the Road Atianta, so Clifford’s current fifth place standing will see him safely to the race. In other racing news, Andy Mahood of North Vancouver took second place in the fourth round of the Conference Series at Westwood recently. The high finish June 6 puts Mahood in third place for the championship, a strong comeback from earlier this season when a blown engine and other’ mechanical problems forced him to miss the first two rounds.
