WOMEN CLIMB McKINLEY VANCOUVER (UPC) - A Canadian four-woman climbing team will set out on May 1 to scale North America's highest mountain, Mt. McKinley in Alaska, but they expect the weather not the terrain will be their greatest obstacle. “We think bad weather _will be our worst enemy,” team member Jane Weller said Wednesday. “May is the most stable period of year on the mountain, but it’s very cold and the winds and snow are very unpredictable” Well, 26, said the women are sensitive “about soun- ding like feminists, but we want to do it without men around because they tend to take the lead. We just want to do it, we're not out to prove anything.” The four experienced Vancouver chmbers plan to make the 17,000-foot ascent in 18 days to an altitude of 20,000 feet (6,194 meters). The Canadian team of Weller, Dr. Elaine Kennedy, 32, Jan St. Amand, 35, and Barb Clemens, 24, prepared for the climb with a year of weight lifting, running and climbing. The women, all of average height and weight, will ski the first few days until they reach an altitude of 12,000 feet. They plan to work their way up the mountain for five hours per day.
