PLAYING FIELDS and parks in North Vancouver suffer from double-booking, lack of maintenance, and inefficient use, ac- cording to a North Vancouver Recreation Commission report. The recently released report has been sent to the actual owners of the parks and fields — North Van- couver City, North Van- couver Distnct, and School District 44 — with suggestions on how the problems can be solved. Recreation Commission staff consulted 30 groups which use the fields, such as the Youth Soccer Association and the minor baseball leagues, before producing the report. One of the most serious problems is a shortage of fields, especially for soccer, which has been increasing in popularity tin recent years. Jim Embley of the soccer association warned North Van District council last year that registration of 6 year olds might have to be restncted this fall because of the field shortage. The Rec Commission recommends more rational use of fields (some sit empty at mes because user groups are given several fields at a ume). North Vancouver District is now drawing up a recreation master plan and will con- sider the Rec Commission's report. The report was on last night’s North Vancouver City council agenda.
