Dorothy Francis was born
and raised in Saskatchewan,
but moved with her family to
North Vancouver in 1952.

“IT have always felt
compelled to paint, I always
punted after school when I
was young. When the
children were small, I would
set up an easel on my table
as soon as they were all
usieep. Art has always been
of integral part of my life.’

Then, back surgery. in
1975 made Francis a semi-
invalid for three long years.

“The only painting I did
was with the. use of a
specially designed easel that
allowed me to lie back in a
recliner to paint. The easel
was designed by my oldest
son, Kelly, because he knew
how much I missed being
xble to paint.”

The final six months of her
ordeal were spent in
Montreal for special treat-
ments. She set up a small
studio in her sister’s apart-
ment where she was staying,
and for the first ume in three
years. was able to sit and
stand at an easel. That
painting heralded a new
format which would make
her comeback into the art
world phenomenal.
