Peter and his mother, from whom Varley Sr. was separated, paying just $8/month rent. Just 14 and out of junior high school, Peter spent his days rambi- ing through the mountains, reading, and exploring his interest in art and photography. Even after he left, his mother and later his sister continued to occupy the cottage, which is still standing, for another 20 years. In 1983, Varley Jr. concluded a three-year labor of love and published a book about his father entitled ‘‘Varley,”” which has a section on the Lynn Valley and Rice Lake years. Varley harkens back to a time watershed was .estricted. “What they're doing now to the watershed is completely irra- tional,’” he believes.
