apparent to all that the
GYRD'‘s fears for a
drought-stricken summer
have yet to be realized.

i However, while the planners in
the GVRD water department may
be relieved that drinking water
reservoirs are plentiful, the rest of
us were actually hoping to experi-
ence summer this year. At least a
ifew days of it.

: But the time for despair is not
yet upon us. Kids and teachers,
your summer holiday may be 25%
over, but heck, you’ve got three-
quarters of it to go.

Once we do start getting some
sunshine, the water supply situa-
tion could turn around very
quickly.

Without a sizable mountain
snowpack melting into the reser-
voir, and given a lack of rain and
excessive hot weather, water de-

* mands could see the reservoirs’
levels begin an alarming drop.

For this reason, the GVRD is
still cautioning us to monitor our
. water demands carefully, and
GVRD municipalities have
restricted !awn and garden
sprinkling to twice a week.

People at even-numbered ad-
dresses can sprinkle from the
hours of 4 a.m. to 9a.m. and 7

‘7 p.m. to 10 p.in. oi Saturdays and
Wednesdays, and residents at odd
numbers can sprinkle the same |
hours on Sundays and Thursdays.

Starting water rationing in the -
spring is one way to help delay or
render unnecessary a full-scale
sprinkling ban such as we had last
year.

'-’ Last year, many people found
that even the full-scale ban wasn’t
harmful to their lawns. While the
grass turned brown, it only took a
:few good autumn rainfalls to get
.it green again.’

on top of your lawn, you are not
only adding nutrients to the'soil,
you are helping the lawn retain
moisture by shading it from the

on your lawn, you could use a
mulching mower that chews up
the grass as you cut it and returns
it to the lawn

Alternatively, you can leave
your grass on the lawn and run
over it again using a regular
mower,

@ By letting your grass grow i bit
longer than usual (over six cen-
timetres), you give it a chance to
provide shade for its own roots.
