Presentation House curator
brings dynamic show to NV

PRESENTATION HOUSE Gallery's
current exhibit Aurora Australis:
Film and Photographic Works is
the North Vancouver gallery's
largest show ever. It's the result of
ever four years of research by
gallery curator, Karen Love, and it
ail began as a simple curiosity.

“After visiting Australia | came
back to Canada and started doing
research here about what was go-
ing on in Australia with regard to
photography,’’ says Love, “‘!
couldn’t find hardly anything at
all. That really got me curious.”

That initial curiosity led Love to
investigate the subject more
thoroughly. In 1986 she travelled
to major galleries across the coun-
try, snooping through catalogues
and art books.

Her research convinced tier that
an exhibit focusing on contem-
porary Australian photographic
works would be worthwhile. So, in
1987, she returned to Australia to
begin work on the project.

There, she me* up with
Australian curator Aan Pollock
Berecry, a film and video lecturer,
and the two began working on the
exhibit as co-curators — Love
concentrating on the photography
and Berecry, the film.

After two years of fundraising,
the project finally got off the
ground this menth.

Aurora Australis features the
work of five well-known Australian
artists who use the photographic
medium and twenty filmmakers,
including Arthur and Corrine Can-
trill.

To introduce the public to the
artists and filmmakers Love and
Berecry set up a series of artists’
and filmmakers’ lectures,
workshops and special screenings,
which began earlier this month
and continue until May 3.

Currently Presentation House is
hosting the work of Julie Brown-
Rrap, Dennis Del Favero, Anne
Ferran and a collaborative team of
Hewson/Walker.

Del Favero’s multi-media wall
installation, Line of Fire, is an in-
triguing work that requires a 25-
minute commitment.

images and places herself in her
work, exploring the representation
of women in the history of art with
a new interpretation.

All of the works deal with the
notion of identity and how identity
is created as we move through life,
says Love. “The works question
the status quo and look at the
possibility of choice and new in-
terpretation.”
