JUDY Prendergast
draws on others peo-
ple’s walls and not only
does:’t get fined, she
gets paid for it.

“I love art and I love
working large,” said the West
Vancouver artist. and art
teacher, on why she started
painting pictures on the inte-
rior walls of homes. “I decid-
ed to brighten up my home
and try it and one thing led to
the hes

Having used watercolours
for more than 20 years, and
studied acrylics at the
Vancouver Art School, she
said she’s merely expanding
on those media: “I just decid-
cd to go big.”

Prendergast’s company,
called Wallflowers — and
Beyond, is based in her home
which, naturally, is also a
showpiece of her work.

The Blueridge area home’s
cntranceway, where she used
acrylic paint on wallpaper,
with a canvas-type texture, is
colourfui and welcoming.
The doors and walls are
colour coordinated with big
orange poppies and delphini-
um in the background and
coordinaiing delphiniuta on
the double front doors.

JUDY Prendergast lives in a garden of her own mak-
ing — she paints murals on interior walls.

Her bedroom is vibrant
with a border of wisteria, wis-
teria leaves and branches,
including a bird on one of the
branches, all in colors of bur-
gundy, lilac, indigo and beige.

And since one of her
teenage daughters is a iorse
iover, Prendergast painted 2
grea: big galloping horse on
her wall while her other
daughter has Winnie-the-
Pooh on her door.

Prendergast, the now-
divorced 45-year-old mother
of three teens, said the first
time she ever “tackled” a wall

was 22 years ago.

“I lived in a little apart-
ment and I put a great big
bunny on the apartment
wall,” she laughed, “I had
asked my landlord and. he
kind of hemmed and hawed
and then said, ‘well, it could
be interesting. * It was a real
focal point.”

Ideas for painting and
colour choice come both
from within and also can be
suggested by clients if they

have a particular vision in_

mind.

bedspreads and that kind of

“We ended up having a
conversation with the mom of
these two litde girls and |
found out she really liked the
Beatrix Potter theme.”

So Prendergast studied
some Potter illustrations and
incorporated those onto cup-
board doors in the children’s
room.

“Then I did my own thing
after that and around the
frames of the cupboard doors
1 did trailing nasturtic.ns that
linked up the cupboards and
then I put a great big tree that -
went right into the ceiling and
a bird in the tree and the sky-
lights all had nasturtiums
around them as well.” ;

She said the mom and the.
girls were all thrilled with the
paintings.

She said a garden theme is:
hier forte, but the beyond part *
of her company name
includes watercolour portraits
of childrer or pets.

Prendergast charges by
combination of size of. aréa,
time and detail involved in the
piece. “My general rate would
be berween $50. and $70 an.
