Carolanne Reynolds is offering West Vancouver District free access to the Internet through the World Wide Web, but thus far district council has not taken her up on the offer. Reynolds and her husband George Pajari are principais of the West Vancouver-based software firm Faximum. “J. [tis part of our community contribution to provide this on a volunteer basis for organizations and groups.” Reynolds wrote in 4 recent letter to council. She was following up on her previous verbal offer to council, which Mayor Mark Sager described as “generous.” Reynolds was concerned about a possible. but yet to be approved. municipal budget allocation of about $30.000 to put West Vancouver District Hall on the Internet through its own web site. There are already about seven B.C. munici- palities that have their own sites, includ- ing Coquitlam. Vancouver, Nanaimo, and most recently, North Vancouver _ District. But Vancouver is ‘taking a slow approach, according to municipal sys- tems coordina- tor Dan Van Balkom. About = 12 municipal employees are using the Internet at ' work, either through: their own . private . accounts »or through Internet Direct,. a private internet provider. ; The employees are involved in an informal in-house study to gauge how different municipal departments can use the Internet. For example, the municipal clerk’s department might use the Internet primarily to make infor- mation available to the public. Residents wanting to apply for development permits could learn everything they need to know through their own home computer. ; Every bylaw written for. the “municipality could b¢ made acces- . sible on the Internet site. ’ Other departments niight use the Internet to collect information. ‘. +For each West Vancouver staff member currently using Internet Direct there is a charge of $20 per month. But if more employees get on board, it would be more cost-effec- tive for the municipality to arrange to provide its own access. Balkom ‘doubted whether Faximum’s private site could accommodate the information West Vancouver would put on the Internet. Coun.
