He had been taken off the list for the dual transplant because he was nol strong enough to recuperate, she said. Roger had been ¢ on dialysis for two years before the opecation, said Brynn. When he discovered the option of obtaining a kidney in India, his hopes soared, but family members were terrified, said Brynn. However, as the date for Roger's departure crept closer, and the more the family heard. about the proce- dure, “it started sounding like. a vood idea.” she added. While in India, Roger waited three weeks before a kidney donor, who turned out to be a 22-year-old man, was found, said Brynn. “This person. was going to donate his kidney whether it was to my dad or someone else,” said _ Brynn- Before the operation, her father and the donor wished each other luck, she said. According .to esti- mates from hotel clerks in Madras,’ a city of four million in southern India where Roger had the opera-" tion, the donor received $2,000 for his kidney. Brynn said her father’s costs for the operation totalled $30,000. British. Columbia’ Transplant Society's O'Connor said 285 peo- ple in the province are on the list for kidney transplants. In 1994, about 107. transplants were done, down about 23% from 1993.
