THE NAME Paine is one that
a number of North Shore resi-
dents are familiar with. You
don’t have to be a pioneer of
the North Shore to recognize
it,.as it is the name of a well-
known hardware store in
Lower Lonsdale.

John B. Paine was the partner in
Paine and McMillan Hardware.
Paine Hardware was first estab-
lished in:1906-on Ist Street and
moved inion the upper side of. the
Aberdeen‘Block, 78-90 Lonsdale
Ave., tion. the building’s comple-
tion in 1910. .

In the 1920s it occupied the
lower storefront as well.

“Very few buildings in any city
can boast having an original busi-
ness that was begun and operated
throughout its history. ..

It was in 1911 that John Paine
had a home built for himself and
family on East Keith Road, within
easy walking distance to his hard-
_ware store.

It is a- tall, distinguished
Edwardian house, designed by a
‘relative of his in Montreal, A.J.C.
Paine.

_ The contractors were Kingsley
and Manning, 616 Robson St.,
Vancouver, and, for the sum of
$3,500, this home was built.

front bay, a bellcast flare to the
shingles, and decorative glass at the
front entry.

It is interesting to note that in an
early photograph of this home the
upper portions of the two large win-
dows at the front had beautiful and
identical stained glass motifs.

Time has. changed this home
very little over the years. It has

been well cared for and recently
was refurbished.

Across the front of the property
is a tall laurel hedge, and the house
is flanked by two large mature
deciduous trees.
