IT’S TIME to rethink your spring wardrobe and clean . your closet. That feeling of staleness in your clothing style won’t disappear until you do something about it. . Think of your wardrobe as ever-changing. This not only means weeding out the old to make room for the new, it means finding new ways to wear the clothes that are already in your closet. After you have cleaned out those pieces not earning their keep (and there always are a few), choose one or two new pieces to update your favorites. Can’t decide which items are just taking up space? Here are some clearing guidelines: & Anything that you haven’t worn in three years will probably never be worn again. Unless it’s a top-quality classic or beloved favorite, weed it out. When in doubt as to what to throw away, consult a friend who knows your lifestyle and changing tastes, and can provide an objec- tive opinion. Don’t save old shoes and hand- bags unless they are in almost new condition. These items will not usually look fresh again. & Organize your cast-offs into two categories: one pile compris- ing costlier items that are still up to date and in very good condi- tion, and one pile of iesser priced and slightly worn clothing. Smart disposal strategies: > Give unworn clothing a new life by allowing someone else, who will appreciate these pieces, 10 wear them. > With the clothing in your first pile, you can either have a swap session with friends who also have unworn clothing you may be in- terested in; hold an office sale during lunch hour among other staff members, or take them toa second-hand store for.resale. & Used clothing stores will take your items on consignment and give you 50% of the selling price. They will keep your clothing in Carol Grenna FASHION STATEMENTS stock for a certain time period, from one to three months, and then clear them at a reduced price or return them to you. Call for a viewing appointment before bringing clothing to the store: Most are accepting summer clothing now. : {t must be in ‘‘almost new” _ condition to be accepted. Only shoes that have never been worn will be accepted, so discard others through swap sales or give them away. While you are at these stores, ; take a look around for items that... could be added to your closet. Remember, good deals don’t just happen, you have to look for them. And these stores are good places to start your search. Consider donating clothing ° from your second pile, of lesser priced and slightly worn garments, .° to a charitable organization such as Family Services, SPCA thrift stores, or associations that ship clothing overseas to needy fami- lies.
