Study drivers who use radar detectors ARE DRIVERS who. use radar detectors less safe than those who don’t? ICBC followed the driving re- cords of 174 drivers who, in the late "80s (in 1989 ICBC ceased of- Sering coverage for radar detec- ters), had purchased coverage for in-vehicle equipment including radar detectors to see what effect owning one of these devices had on their driving habits. The results were released earlier this year as part of an interna- tional conference on accident prevention. Past research has concluded that vehicles travelling sigaificant- ly faster or slower than other traf. fic increases the risk of an acci- dent as one motorist overtakes another. There are increased oppor- tunities for sideswipe and head-on crashes that simply don’t exist when all vehicles arc travelling at the same speed and holding their position in traffic. However, with speeding, there is less time to react to changes in road and traffic conditions, and the faster a vehicle is going at the time of impact, the more serious the injuries suffered by the people involved. According to ICBC's research, owners of radar detectors tend to be men between 21 and 42 years old who drive mainly for business purposes or to and from work in Currently BC. ferry THE FOLLOWING are the current schedules for B.C. When comparing the accident and “conviction records, resear- chers found that owners of radar detectars were three times as likely as non-owners to have had three or four accidents during the period in which the study took place, and were three times as likely to have been at fault, In spite of the fact that most people who buy radar detectors do sO to avoid speeding tickets, detector owners were at least three tiems as likely to have four or more speeding convictions. Radar detector owners also had a significantly higher rate of acci- dent claims occurring on weekends where only their vehicle was in- volved — a possible indication of drinking and driving. What researchers could not determine was whether owning a radar detector encouraged people to speed, or if the people who bought them were likely to be speeders in any event. Either way, they concluded that those who own them are probably less safe than others on the road. scheduled sailings 10:50 a.m., 4:40 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 3 p.m., 3:55 p.m. (the Thursday sailing will be replaced by a dangerous cargo sailing at which time no passengers will be allowed to board), 4:50 p.m., 5:50 p.m., 7:20 p.m., 8:10 p.m., 9 p.m., 9:45 p.m. : @ Herseshoe Fay to Bowen Island: Effective Christmas Day and New Year’s Day only: On Christmas Day and New Year's Day, the first sailings to and from Bowen Island have been cancelled. In order to meet the cost of claims antigipated against policies issued in 1993, ICBC will need 9.5% more im premium incame. Per- centage changes oof individual motorists will vary depending on the coverages they choose and their claim-related scale discount. @ Premiums for comprehensive coverage will rise an average $6 for most motorists, reflecting the continued rise in the number and cost of theft, fire and vandatism claims. The minimum deductible for comprehensive coverage will be increased to $100 from $50, (CBC will also offer $200 and $500 deductibles. These deducti- bles will now apply to claims for fire and lightning damages and for looks at Highlights of Autoplan changes for 1993 the total Joss of the vehicle due to theft. @ The minimum deductible for collision coverage will double, from $100 to $200. Reflecting an improvement in claims, premiums for collision coverage will fall — the second vear in a row the cost of this coverage has dropped, Sav- ings for claim-free motorists will average about $35. @ Those making no-fault claims for disability benefits (people who caused accidents resulting in inju- ties to themselves) will now have their payments begin on the cighth calendar day of disability. This will bring B.C.’s system ia line with other Canadian jurisdictions. @ The coverage limit for Underinsured Motorist Protection (UMP) included with a basic Autoplan insurance package will be reduced to $1 million from $2 million, Before 1992, when !JMP was an option, any coverage was shared between all occupants of the vehicle. Now, the $1 million limit is available to each occupant. Individuals may opt to purchase additioncl UMP coverage to $2 millica. © A new policy will allow most motorists who have converted their vehicles to run on propane or natural gas to cover the replacement cost of those conver- sions in the event of a total loss. @ All the above changes to Autoplan are effective immediate- ly for new policies from January i, 1993 on renewal of existing policies. vt Custom Lease believes you should enjoy the experience of acquiring your new or used vehicle.
