MAILBOX Listen to Collins’ warnings Dear Editor: I must raise objection to the Ju- ly 3 article in Zap! by Taleeb Noormohamed. While the writer has every right to question the statements of Doug Collins, he should be very careful that his own statements are correct, especially when writ- ing for young readers. Noormohamed claims that the number of crimes committed by ‘minorities is far lower than that of whites and are far less violent. Figures from Toronto prove that, although blacks form about 5% of the population, they are responsible for about 40% of the crime. Of course now the police have been instructed not to keep statistics of crimes by race as it does not look good for the visible minorities. in Vancouver we have had a re- cent announcement by the police that Asian gangs-are out of con- trol and are responsible for a con- siderable amount of crime. Vancouver is not the only city having problems with Asian gangs as, at this time, a meeting of sev- eral hundred police and other law Officers is taking place in an at- tempt to find a solution for this problem. In Hong Kong al! windows of homes are protected by steel bars to prevent robbery, and in some places insurance cannot be ob- tained unless a heavy steel door is also fitted to the home. In Hong Kong many banks, jewellers and other stores employ armed guards to protect their property agains!) the numerous hold-ups. The warnings of Doug Collins should be heeded. No country should admit larger numbers of immigrants of any nationality or race than can be assimilated. In the past in North America we have seen antagonism towards immigrants from Ireland, ftaly and England, to say nothing of the American draft dodgers, when their numbers have been too great and they have brought with them their own moral standards, ethics aud principles.
