blasts
NDP

David Mitchell has blasted
the New Democratic gov-
ernment for putting what he
said were NDP friends and
insiders on the govern-
ment’s payroll.

Late last month, the Liberals
teleased the names and salazres for
26 people on mier Mike Har-
court’s staff. said the
wages for the 26 will cost B.C.
taxpayers over $1 million a year.

The fist also highlights over 50
appointments made by the NDP
since they took office.

“This is the height of NDP
hyprocisy,"’ said Mitchell. *‘Old-
style patronage of this kind does
nothing | to restore public con-

He noted that former NDP

years at a salary of $100,000 a
year.

“If the premier really needed
Mr. Gathercole’s advice couldn't
he have simply asked for it rather
than paying him a million
dollars?’* asked Mitchell.

The Liberals have estimated
that patronage appointments made
so far will cost taxpayers $3.9 mil-
lion.

The highest paid government
employee included on the list of
26 names released by the Liberals
is Harcourt's press secretary, An-
drew Orr, who was appointed to
the job in January and is paid
$78,082 annually.
