The monks embody a continu-
ing expressive tradition dating,
back more than 500-years to the
founding of the Gyuto Tantric
University. Following the rituals of
the Guhyasamaja Tantra, suc-
cessive generations of monks have
refined a style of chant-whereby
each monk shapes vocal chords to
produce a chord — two to three
tones at once.

Sustained and shifting gutteral
groans are percussively punc-

tuated as the monks visualize
music deities.
