N. Van director retires from Neighbourhood House assoc. NORTH VANCOUVER resident Elmer Heim recent- ly retired from the Association of Neighbourhood Houses after 37 years as the association's executive director. But Helm’s commitment to Lower Mainland youth will continue on in the form of the Elmer Helm Youth Legacy Fund. Helm, 64, has established a fund that will be ad- ministered by the Alexandra foundation and will be used to support youth programs. At an Oct. 24 retirement dinner in honor of Helm, the Alexandra Foundation announced it was donating $100,000 to the fund in addition to the $5,700 received by the fund in private donations. Helm’s retirement marks the end of 37 yerrcs of service to the associaton. In 1952, he started working with Gordon Neigh- bourhood House in Vancouver as a student social! worker where he eventually rose to the level of assisistant executive director. tn 1966 Helm became the association's first execu- tive director, a full-time position he retained until his retirement. “We think he’s made the association what it is to- day,"’ said Renee Bohun, Neighbourhood House de- velopment coordinator. Under Helm’s direction, the association has grown from three Neighbourhood Houses to direct eight ac- tive houses and a budget of $7.5 million. NORTH VANCOUVER CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
