40 ~ Wednesday. May 19. 1999 - North Shore News Dear Editor: Noel Wright's column on “Victim: manufacturing” is all too tue, and sadly all too applicable right here in B.C. and Canada. In recent years we have witnessed an outpouring of repression and hardship tron: our native Indians. I am get- ting a littl wear, of these sorry tales and dismaved at the amounts of redemption moncy that self-righteous politicians are willing to spend on our behalf in an effort to sanitize our early Pioneers’ actions to found this nation. Clearly the native commu- nities here lost culture, land, heritage and rights, to a more sophisticated ard powerful culture. From the day the first white man set foot on this contineat the native cultures were doomed, and to a lesser extend, sul are. This is a process that has been going on in the world for centuries and is still going on and will continue to go on, For the most. part the process here in Canada was benign, despite some atroci- ties, land was traded away by the elders and leaders, and lit- tle blood was spilled over it. In the U.S. the process was similar with a few exceptions in the central plains. The native populations were ucated, as were all prim- itive cultures in’ those days, with a mixture of contempt, exploitation, and respect and sympathy, with a strong desire to bring heathen souls to Christianity. J chink we should stop this nonsense of berating ourselves for the “sins of our fathers.” I have no real guilt over what happened, being English-born T recognize that my ancestors raided and pil- Jaged their way all over the world to becoming 2 powerful Empire. Tn 1840 what the British in Hong Kong did tor “a barren rock" is testimony to the forces of low taxes, tree enter- prise and daistes faire. The local Chinese popula- tion are more than happy with it, something the 1] govern- nents of this country would be better off learning trom, thaa blowing away precious tax dollars on spiritual cleans- ing. Native peoples can never turn the cluck back, the spirits of the forests have been replaced with the sound of chainsaws. It would be far better cto integrate with “white” society than reject it. Education and skills are worth far more than a pavotf from the govern- ment. Alter the money is squan- dered by the generation that receives it what of the future then? Warwick Palmer North Vancouver | Vegetables Now \\ Sweet & juicy large FLORIDA VALENCIA | Taxpayer not happy with happiness poll Open letter to Mayor Don Bell and North Vancouver District Council: Re: Happiness /satisfaction poll. I think the garbage men do a great job. T love the gardens, for instance the entrance to Cares Park is spectacular, and Tam quite satisfied with the rate of snow removal. E think there is far too much noise, transit nceds improving and the air smells worse every day. So] suppose vou could rate me as a satistied voter, but by golly, alter hearing Councillor Trevor Carolan (1 believe) and Ernie Crist on the CBC on April 23, I really shake my head. You are going to spend money on what? On a poll that will tell vou no more than you know now. Far from “seasoned councillors” being threatened, (as the councillor speaking for the motion stated) [ believe the neo- phytes must be groping for a cause. For God's sake, back off, get on with governing. We all know there is not enough money for evervthing we want so let’s spend it ina more-or-less intelligent fashion. M. T.
