A PRO-LIFE billboard at the North Vancouver SeaBus terminal has been vandalized for the third time in less than a year. By ELIZABETH COLLINGS News Reporter The latest act of vandalism, which is estimated to have occur- red late March 8, includes a row of four neon orange coathangers spray-painted at the bottom of the billboard with corresponding splashes of green and yellow paint higher up. The splashes of paint appear to have been made by someone filling light bulbs with paint and hurling them against the board. The damage represents the third time the pro-life billboard, one of 14 billboards in the SeaBus sta- tion’s bus-loading area, has been singled out for vandalism, accord- ing to Art Gagne, director of THAT'S ~ HOW MANY CANADIANS ARE FIGURE SKATERS Conca! PORTE SS North Shore Pro-Life which spon- sors the billboard. “They’re the only ones out of the whole series of billboards so it’s not just random violence. So someone obviously has very low tolerance of freedom of expres- sion,’’ Gagne said. The billboard shows an eight-week-old fetus alongside the message, Alive & Growing: heart beats, brainwaves, fingerprints, feels pain. “We've stayed away from any of those messages which were ag- gressive or mean-spirited. We've gone out of our way to choose in- formative rather than contentious ones,’’ Gagne said. Rod Clark, chairman of the Lions Gate Hospital board of directors, said the incident was “*regrettable."’ “I was hoping we were past this sort of thing. I hope this is just an isolated incident,’’ Clark added. Although North Shore Pro-Life did not report to the police the earlier incidents, which occurred in fate spring and November, this time Gagne has asked the North Vancouver RCMP to step up surveillance of the billboard so the incident doesn't recur. “We took our lumps the first couple of times, but obviously if it’s going to keep going on ...,"’ Gagne said. North Shore Pro-Life rents the space from Seaboard Advertising Co. for approximately $700 per month. Gagne estimates it will cost $100 for North Shore Pro-Life to replace the sign.
