Karen Magnussen RecCentre is
offering foil fencing classes in the
new year.

Beginners classes will take place
every Saturday starting Jan. 13
from 10-12 a.m.

Intermediate classes start Mon-
day, Jan. 15 from 6-8 p.m.

Instructor Zbigniew Pietrusinski
is hoping to revive fencing as a
sport on the North Shore.

A martial art of east Asian ori-
gia, Pietrusinski says modern fenc-
ing is both competitive and
challenging.

Pointing to the therapeutic merit
of fencing, he quotes George
Silver’s Paradoxes of Defence in
1599: ‘The exercising of weapons
putteth away aches, griefs and
diseases, it expelleth melancholic,
cholericke and evil conceits, it
keepeth a man in breath, perfect

. health and long lyfe.”

Emphasis in the classes will be
on combat effectiveness using
techniques from different fencing
schools.

Pietrusinski has also started a
North Vancouver Fencing Club
and is holding monthly recreation
league fencing tournaments at
Sealynn RecCentre.
