Anyone who has suffered from dry skin is familiar with the rough, scaly appearance, and the accom- panying itching and chafing. Some people suffer from it year round while others may experience the symptoms only. during the winter months. But, take heart ... rough, red, flaky skin can be helped. Dry skin is the result of one or more factors that strip away pro- tective oils or cause moisture to evaporate. These factors include too much exposure to the sun’s harmful rays, harsh soaps, strong winds, low temperatures and humidity, air conditioners, central heating, saunas, too long or too hot baths and showers, tight clothing and poor sutrition. Age is another factor. With age, the skin cells weaken and lose the ability to hold moisture. When there isn’t enough moisture, the surface of the skin first shows signs of scaliness and roughness: hands are generally the first area to show these signs. Sport fashions heat up for spring A RECENT sport fashion show in Munich showed a clear picture of the fashion Tole which activewear now plays in the modern leisure wardrobe, Fashion excitement, mixed with hi-tech functionality, now delivers inspiration for double-duty leisure wardrobes. Deluxe looks’ in tennis items, such as printed insets and em- broidered logos, were used by European designers. Also for spr- ing are hot bi-color, asymmetrical, optical effects. Stylish refinements took over in golf clothes; very strong were safari looks, colorful resort prints, recolored classic checks, and stripes in greens and lilacs. Colorful resort prints and in- formative logos were used for golf tops, as well as safari and uniform ideas. In walking and trekking, the key was a color explosion using hi-tech qualities in high fashion shades. Jackets, shoes and rucksacks look- ed great in keily green, lime, pur- ple, shot red and sunflower yellow. The designers leading in this hot color excitement were Lafont and Head. Still hot, and in the running for the number one inspirational source, was the west coast; cycling and motorcycling inspiration was in second place. The cycling boom influenced lines such as Body Glove, Puma and Cre-Act. leathers ° hand bags * luggage wa Kets a] aceassories: Park Rol N North 925-4125 B Park Royal North 925-4425 F If not cared for, the skin then begins to shrink and crack. The more cracked it becomes, the less effective it is as a guard against bacteria which can cause it to become infected and inflamed. There are warning signs to look for. Ask yourself these questions: does your skin feel tight or itchy after bathing? Does it look dull or feel rough? Does it feel raw, tender or sore, and is it sometimes red? If you answered yes to even two of these questions, you have dry skin. The quickest way to revitalize dry skin is to soak the dry area in moderately warm water for ten minutes. Gently blot with a_ towel. Remove only dripping water; you will want some moisture left on the skin suzface. Immediately coat the skin with lotion to seal in the water. If you have dry skin, stay away from thin, watery products because the water, although it may feel cool on the skin, tends to evaporate quickly and does little to heal the roughened area. Look for a lotion that is oil- based and contains petroleum jel- ly. Here are additional ways to soothe dry skin and keep it healthier and younger looking: © Humidify your home or work area * Take shorter baths and showers and use warm, not hot, water © Avoid dry saunas ® Blot your skin after bathing and apply a lotion on damp skin ® Wear protective gloves when your hands are exposed to water, or when you’re gardening or out in the cold @ Be sure your diet includes suffi- cient Vitamin A (yellow vegetables, fish and milk) and Vitamin E- (leafy green vegetables and whole grains) © Avoid sunbathing altogether or wear a good sunscreen at all times while outside.
