18 - Wednesday, Februury 24, 198% - North Shore News WOMEN'S BASKETBALL -ollege lues win and lose IN WOMEN'S basketball action at Delbrook recently, the Capilano College Blues team suffered a close loss, then pulled together to win the next game. “We made lots of rookie mistakes,’ women’s coach Greg Sharpe said of the recent game against Fraser Valley College. ‘‘We travelled and threw the ball away — those kinds of dumb mistakes — our inexperience hurt us.”” The first half of the game was a battle of the defenses, with veteran Capilano guard Glenda Knight leading a Blues’ defence that forc- ed Fraser Valley to take low- percentage shiots. Fraser Valley rallied against the Blues by using an effective full- court press. Capilano had pro- blems with the pressure and turned the ball over, but Fraser Valley could not consistently score on the Cap turnovers. Capilano led 27-26 at the half. The Blues came out a little better prepared to handle Fraser Valley’s press.in the second half, but they still had problems.in the cheap turnover department. Once’Cap relaxed and got con- tro! of the ball, the guards were able to get the ball down low to forwards Crystal Caldwell, Lori Tarasewich and Treneil Tyerman, who were able to go inside and score. , CLOSE GAME The score was close throughout the second half. The game was decided in the final seconds. Cap player Jen Smailridge had her tying goal attempt blocked. Fraser. Valley took the ball and ran the clock down until Cap’s Knight fouled and stopped the timer: Fraser: Valley sunk a bonus free throw with seven seconds left on the clock, putting them up by three points. Capilano’s Smallridge at- tempted a three-point shot, but it rode the rim and popped out. The final score was Fraser Valley Lady Cascades 63, Capilano Blues 60. fo With their loss to Fraser Valley still fresh in their minds, the Blues women came out to right a few of their previous night’s wrongs. They had no problem downing the Malaspina Lady Mariners 79- 46. The Cap squad did not really get going until the latter part of the “first half, when their full-court press dominated. the Malaspina team. — The Cap team still had some problems with their offence and forced too many shots instead of relaxing and playing their game. PEP TALK “TI wasn't happy with our first half,’’ said Sharpe. ‘*We had a real positive halftime talk. We came out in the second half more relax- ed, we got into the groove and performed like we can.” Veteran guard Knight was again the strong player for the Blues, taking contro] of the team on the floor and chorcographing her mostly rookie teammates in their offence. “She (Knight) is a real solid player, a class act,’’ said Sharpe. “She makes a big difference with the rookies. She’s a sportsman who leads by example out there on the court.’’ Other strong players for Cap were forwards Tarasewich and Caldwell, the- Most Valuable Player at last year’s B.C. high school championships. The two players worked the baseline well and were able to get inside for the baskets. Smaltridge, with mostly outside shooting, led the Capilano team with 18 points, Knight was next best with a total of 12. Blowout was the best way to describe the 83-32 annihilation of the Trinity Western University team by the Blues women's basketball team in the week prior to these games. STRONG DEFENCE Capilano played strong defense and forced the Trinity players to take off-balance and low-percen- tage shots. ‘Cap's defense was effective, but it was their powerful offense that rendered Trinity helpless. Guards Knight and Smailridge consistently fed the ball down to forwards Caldwell and Tyerman. “*We worked the ball down low to, Tyerman and: Caldwell. We knew we could get the outside shot when we wanted it, so we concen- trated on getting down low,’’ said Sharpe. Caldwell lead the Cap team with 25 points and nine rebounds. Tyerman followed with a solid 20 points and an outstanding 14 re- bounds. Julle Oldale was also effective on the boards for Cap, as she pull- ed down nine rebounds — seven of those defensive ones.
