8 - Sunday, December 6, 1987 - North Shore News WY student named Rhodes scholar WEST VANCOUVER’S Robert Wai has been selected as B.C.'s Rhodes scholar for 1988, The 21-year-old University of B.C. first-year Jaw student was notified Nov. 28 that he had won the $15,000-per-year scholarship, which is one of only 11 awarded in Canada this year. ROBERT WAI “I’ve calmed down a little since I first found out,’ Wai said Thursday. ‘‘But it’s great. It will be a fabulous way to study law.’’ The scholarship will allow Wai to study at England’s Oxford Uni- Reg. Price $7.99 versity from 1988 to 1990. It will pay his travel and living expenses for two years, with an option for a third year. Wai, who has a brother and two sisters, graduated from West Van- couver's Sentinel Secondary School in 1984 with a Governor General bronze medal. He was a provineial champion badminton player and represented Sentinel in basketball, volleyball and other athletics. After a year at UBC, Wai went on to Montreal’s McGill University in 1985, where he received the Sir Edward Beatty Gold Award as the top graduate in Honors Economics last spring. Wai said his years at Sentinel were extremely beneficial, and singled out instruction he received at the school in science, history and English as great inspiration to his subsequent academic pursuits. Rhodes scholarships, which were established in 1904, recognize outstanding scholastic abilities, but also overall student character, leadership qualities, athletic achievements and contribution to community activities. Beyond his goid medal academic achievements at McGill and elsewhere, Wai’s qualifications for the prestigious scholarship includ- ed editing the McGill Journal of Political Economy, being president of the badminton club, tutoring high school students and volun- teering to do work for housebound elderly people. He said the chance to study law at Oxford will be an excellent op- portunity to experience the renowned university's method of instruction, which, he said, is much different from that offered at North American universities. Wai is also an accomplished pianist and writer. His father Wing Wat, a lawyer, said the scholarship is a great honor for his son and his family. “Wei are very happy... very proud,'' he said. The Wai family has lived in West Vancouver since 1970. EXPECT EXCELLENCE MARYLIN TOWARD | offer experience, en- thusiasm, and ability proven by aconsistently successful sales record.
