In fact, by the time this film has played Vancouver theatres for another week, the box office will find that film goers will have beat a hasty retreat from its boring attempt at profanity and humor. In place of quality gags, director Willard Huyck has settled for cheap cracks about sexuality. Instead of quality acting from Dudley Moore, we are offered a few funny lines that almost make you smile, almost. The Best Defence is a film about the evils of the mad military’s race for more destructive weapons and an unscrupulous industry that will do anything to sell the By COLIN LAMONT weapons to the armed forces, even if they don’t quite work Wytie Cooper (Dudley - Moore) is the/often bungling engineer that is more con- cerned wit} talking his often reluctant Wife into their bed than he i§ with building the ultimate néw tools of war. Lieutenant Landry (Eddie Murphy) is more concerned with close encounters of the below navel kind with a Kuwait belly-dancer than he is with testing the weapons that Cooper is supposed to be designing. While it can be said that Murphy, as the fast-talking, Your Best Defence is to stay home shoot from the hip GI Joe does a more credible perfor- mance than the henpecked Moore, neither of them will get medals for good acting. Director Huyck should also lose a stripe or two for the confusing time sequence in the film that has Moore in California in 182 building weapons while Murphy is test riving tanks in Kuwait in 1984. The stories are supposs to cross over one another b the mismatched years woh’t let them even come close. Moore muddles along, gaining secret information on how \to de p a defence system for/the XM-10 An- nihilator fank, and claims credit (fgr the discevery. Frustrated by his wife’s lack of interest in his advances, he also decides to credit himself with the seduction of a female engineer, after spen- ding boring scene after bor- ing scene fantasizing about it. Meanwhile, out on the desert in Kuwait, Murphy, the hip, laid-back tank com- mander finds out that the new secret weapon is not all it is made out to be and in fact doesn’t work at all. Only a change of heart from the California engineer Cooper saves the day and forces the evil military and U.S. in- dustry to recall the weapon. While the message about the modern arms race is rele- vent enough in The Best Defence, the poorly scripted and amateur editing job done on the film make it a losing battle for anyone trying to watch it. In fact the best defence m this film is to stay at-Home and watch pro- fessional athletes do battle at the Olympics. VANCOUVER CRAFT MARKET The Best of B.C.
