Dear Editor: Future shock is right here and now for the North Shore. Two major proposals, “Port of Van- couver Master Plan” and “Railroad Transport of Dangerous Goods, Greater Vancouver Region” would, if implemented, have in- credible physical, social and financial effects on our community. And if it isn't bad enough having the provincial government interfering directly in determining land use and creating financial chaos for municipal governments, we now have the feds moving in with recommendations in their Port of . Vancouver Master Plan which tells us Dear Editor: Last year, just before the municipal elections, your reporter Terry Lavender, together with Roger Nickel, director and former finance chairman of NoVVA, en- deavoured to make junior sport, in that case minor hockey, an issue in the elections in the City and District of North Vancouver. This year — again just before the elections, Terry Lavender appears to be attempting to politicize sport and recreation, ‘in the form — of soccer, and the alleged lack of fields and municipal funding. . to all candidates, everything from the fact that they consider the City of North Vancouver has enough parks to rejecting the idea of the eventual removal of Hooker Chemical. A positive feature of this thirty-year plan for Van- couver harbour is the fact that four public meetings are being held for some com- munity input. The first one, held at Presentation House October 26, had standing room only, and it was ob- vious that four hours was not enough to satisfy the con- cerns of the audience. “People are more important than dollars,” was the message most warmly ap- plauded. It is my opinion that actions such as these can do nothing but. harm to amateur sport, especially if the campaign is designed to assist one political party in the elections, as was the case last year. Local party politics will be invoived to a large degree in this - year’s municipal elections. Despite your claims to the contrary. NoVVA is alive and well and working hard to elect its own members to school board and council NoVVA has circulated a question paper the an- NoVVA stil there Dear Editor: Iam writing as a member of the Taxpayers Association for Good Soverneient in reply to’ your. editorial column of October 31, entitled Partisan Folly.1 find it amusing that in the years NoVVA_ has been in existence, no argument against it has been raised, but as soon as NoVVA collapses in a welter of internal troubles, all municipal organizations are branded as. dangerous folly. We are asked to believe on the strength of your reporting that NoVVA is no longer | concerned in elec- tions, for aldermanic candidates, but the names of many Of these candidates are very familiar as NoVVA members, and a_ sudden spate of resignations would appear very suspicious at this time. The belief ex- pressed by you that NoVVA will not be contesting the November 20 municipal elections shows a degree of worldly innocence not usually associated with newspaper editors. T.F. In this respect such a group could also respond to the Canadian Transport Commission report, “Railroad Transport of Dangerous Goods" as requested by Jim Eisler, CTC’s Pacific ‘regional manager. “Thousands of carloads of materials, rail hazardous ranging from explosives to sulphuric acid swers to these questions to be published in your newspaper just before the elections — no doubt en- suring that NoVVA_ can- didates appear responsible, desirable people, despite their recent internal strife.
