I met Pablo when he was'a
seventeen-year-old
boy. -He -and -his' Grand-
mother were:aboard the ship
I was .on, travelling from
Buenos Aires down the coast
of Argentina, around Cape
Horn and over to the
Falkland Islands. .

Actually, I. didn’t meet
him. on board. the ship - we
were in a lifeboat, in the
midst of a howling gale.
Aside from the
breaking over the top of the
boat, . soaking
passengers, none of us had
life jackets and my ability-to
do more than a ten-foot dog
paddle is questionable.

Don’t ask what in the hell I
was doing in a lifeboat - but
it seemed like a good idea at
the time.

Pablo, sitting beside me,
observed my white face and
assured me that he was an
excellent swimmer and
would see to my welfare. I
remarked that if something
wasn't done soon, we'd have
to swim INSIDE the life boat
as we were up to our ankles
in icy seawater. Luckily, we
got hauled back aboard.

Next day, Pablo asked me
if I would help him with his
English. Anyone willing to
attempt a swim with me in
the South Atlantic deserves
all the help I'can give, so our

sfessons began. Each day

requests for changes in birth
records as well.

Department said Wednesday
the vital record division
averages one request for a
sex-altered certificate a
month.

“And 99 percent of them
come from people who now
live in California,” he said.

Several states allow
people who change genders
to ask state record-kcepers
for new birth certificates
reflecting their new sex,
statistics officials said.

English still isn’t the greatest
but he has had a few other

. things on his_mind - such as

becoming a doctor. He
accomplished that in 1979
and is now well into his
second year residency in
cardiglogy.

Which brings me to one of
the points I'd like to bring to

: ' your attention.

Pablo is fluent in French -
in fact, he is qualified to

*; teach French through the

Alliance Francais.

His family isn’t poor - both
his parents are doctors too,
so they. aren’t on the bread
line. Pablo’s dream was to
attend university in Mon-
treal as a graduate student in
cardiology and to this end,

he visited the Canadian

Consulate in Buenos Aires.
They all but laughed at him.
He was ‘told that the “quota”
on Argentines was filled and
would remain-filled until he

was an old man. Fur-
thermore, they wouldn't
even tell him what the

qualifications were for a
student visa into Canada.
It strikes me a little

strange that a healthy, well-
educated young man should

“Now, to travel for the
Argentine people is im-
possible. The dollar went to
the sky - when I was in
Canada (note: 1979) one
dollar U.S. was 2,000 pesos.
Now 7,800, one dollar!!! The

economic situation is very,

very grave.” ;

THIS IS IN LESS THAN
TWO YEARS!
