Chris Kitteringham, a social worker with the Alternative Program for the Prevention of Chemical Dependen- cies, spoke at the North Shore Women’s Centre ‘Women’s Night’ recently about’ the prevention of drug and chemical dependency — particularly the use of prescription drugs by women. Kitteringham’s special interest is drug dependency in women. In her opening remarks she explained that, “statistically, women and the elderly receive the most drug prescriptions in our society.” Kitteringham went on to point out that often a women will have been placed on a tranquilizer at one point in her life because it was neces- sary at that time. In many Don’t abuse legal drugs cases, however, the original problem that necessitated the “prescription disappears but the patient has become reliant on the tranquilizer in order to cope ith other aspects of her life. Although drug depen- dency is an easy habit to acquire it is frequently a difficult one to arrest. One of the difficulties is that there is a stigma attached to addiction and people who feel they should seek help are often afraid of identi- fication. For that reason the Alternatives program meets with individuals on a one-to- one counselling basis. Alternatives is a non- profit society which operates an out-patient treatment program to assist individuals who have developed problems associated with the. misuse of alcohol and/or other drugs. The Alterna- tives Program provides services exclusively to the North Shore community. Alternatives can be reached at 892A Marine Drive, North Vancouver, B.C.
