TORONTO (UPC) - The value of the Cana- dian dollar rose shghtly early Tuesday in fairly ac- tive trading to 82.64 US cents from its lowest level since the Great Depres- sion, 82.50 cents at the opening of trading. Traders reported Cana- dian and European cur- rencies edged upwards in early trading. The dollar closed trading at 82.72 cents Monday, dipped at Tuesday’s open and then rallied past the opening price, the lowest level in Canadian dollar at depression low 47 years. The dollar's lowest value ever was in the 80 cent (US) range in November, 1831. It clas- ed out last week at 82.99 US cents. The dollar has been under extreme pressure as imvestors sold their Canadian dollars’ for Amenican dollars to take advantage of a greater return offered by higher US interest rates. Rises in US interest rates Tuesday mcreased the pressure on Canada’s currency.
