Al2-Sunday News, October 5, 1980 North Vancouver City council’s resolve to build a replacement for the out- dated Mahon swimming pool waivered Monday as some council members became unsure exactly what they wanted. -. Almost a year ago, City council decided to build an open-air pool in the Lower Lonsdale area to replace the pool in Mahon Park, and Monday evening started with the intention of hiring a consultant to plan the new pool. But instead, council voted to ask the City engineer to draft a resolution whereby the consultant would first report on whether one large pool] or a number of smaller pools would better serve the City. Alderman Stella Jo Dean started the move away from council's earlier decision by saying she felt an’ indoor pool would be better. Then Alderman Gordon Cross suggested that because of declining attendance at North Shore pools, maybe “we have come to the end of people’s desires to have outdoor swimming pools of this type.” He felt that “a little bit of innovative thought” should be put into finding alter- natives to a single outdoor pool. He suggested a number of small wading pools might be the answer. Both Aldermen Frank Marcino and Gary Payne called the idea “silly” but some other aidermen supported Cross in at least looking at the concept A deadlock was reached over whether to have a consultant prepare plans for a number of small pools as well 2s one pool,.so council decided to send the matter back to staff. The end result will be that a consultant will give an expert opinion on which type of pool will better serve City residents.
