. awa wad page8- Janaary 4, - Dear Editor: Over the past few weeks -- your publication has received and reprinted a number of. letters regarding the propos- ed fand exchange between - the District of North Vancou- ver and the North Shore Winter Club. The Club would like to have this. opportunity to outline the reasons for: the exchange and to correct the ' mis-information published to date. The North Shore Winter Club is a.non-profit society whose aims and objectives are to promote, organize and manage an athletic sports . Club for the interestof the communities on the North Shore. At present the society has'a membership of 1349 families of which 1173 families reside on the North. Shore and pay taxes to North Shore municipalities. The society is aiso a tax paying resident of the North Shore. Although the Club is’ priv rately owned by its members, every year thous- ands of non-members from the North eth Shore facility ia share our curing, ewaecees hockey, figure skateing and 7 swimming. The Club is also the focal point and host for a. me many local, Provincial National competitions that are beneficial .to our district. “ae The community can also be. very proud of our member _ achievements that have done so much to publicize this area. Karen Magnussen, World Champion Figure Skater, Lindsay Davie Spark- es, Canadian Champion Cur- ler and many others in figure skating, curling, hockey and swimming are great ambass- adors cf our community. land swap Dear Editor: It would appear irom the number of write-ins to the editor that the small group of dissidents are more con- cerned with private cuter- _ prise expansion by the North | Shore Winter Club than improving Bridgman Park facilities. There is always ' that small group who will . inevitably disagree whether they are effected or not. Bridgman Park is a fine spot for a picnic on 30% develoys:d park land, 20% jogging trail; 25% North Vancouver District Land Fill Depot and 25% tangled bush, garbage and beer’ bottles left by children who cannot drink at home. Somewhere in that percent- age is the washroom for dogs © _to which I can attest after jogging 350 miles over their droppings. The parcel of land in question is undeveloped bush area which even the vdogs or. drinking children * 1978 - ‘Noeth Shore News tennis ‘land | Club = fully community are many. The: E Howe reserves the night to edit for length, peaallty 8 and tast 7 -In 1976 the Winter Club and the North Shore Winter Club amalga- mated and embarked. on a $2,500, 000 expansion prog- ram to include a new. hockey/figure skating sur- face, indoor. and outdoor and. raquet ball/ squash complex. The objective is to provide our members and members. of the community with a _ more varied facility. For this expansion: the society re- quires 2 small area of unused raw land at-the south of their — existing property (12091 sq. ft.) This is far less than the reported. . The Mayor and staff have suggested an equal land exchange of the unused raw (12091 . sq.ft.)for a portion of the Club property (12091 _sq.ft.). which is presently a landscaped area along Keith Road. This exchange wouid enable the Club to place its expansion in the most fitting iocation away from Keith Road and would retain the landscaped green te meee fe mterr ne belt area between the road - and the Ciub parking area. The North Shore Winter | supports the proposed land exchange by- laws. The benefits to the Our area would have the most up-to-date sports facility around, not to mention the increase in tax revenue to our municipality. This is land use in the best interest of us all. and we are confident the public and the District Council will support the by-laws for the sake of us all.. E.L. Hubbard President North Shore Winter Club _ Backs Bridgman avoid and I can see nothing I as a taxpayer could request of council to develop for public use other than pos- sibly a washroom for dogs. The number of club members who are district taxpayers is quite significant and showld not be dis- - counted. We contribute taxes which the club pays, not to mention our personal tax for recreational hockey, tennis and swimming facilities in the District that we do not _ use. Consider one or two thousand additional families — taxing existing facilities for recreation if the North Shore Winter Club did not exist or expand. _As a taxpayer I do not want the council to give the land in question away — without - compensation to theDistrict’s taxpayers and feel a land swapping or financial settle- ment.wonld certainly be in the’ majority interest. ag Bill Herman _ North Vancouver Capilano | _ Dear Editor: The newly. released Sey -mour Development Plan will “be only a half measure unless it is part and parcel of a total community. plan, based on the GVRD population guide- lines and carried out_ with complete and. full neighbor- . hood participation. - a Dear Editor: . Without the warm friendly cooperation of all the men of the Fire Department the Fund could not possibly carry out this important project. We are most grateful to . them. - We wish to “thank the group of Volunteer Firemen, crganized by Dale Graham, for their help. To Mr. and Mrs. Arthur. Kilby, Mrs. Verne Hewett, Mrs. Irene Caverly and Mrs. Betty Martin - a big vote of thanks for devoting hours of their time to this worthy cause. All the toys and food have been packed and delivered to - approximately 95 homes. I: think it’s about time I spoke up.for my rights as a citizen of North Vancouver. I think it would be plain stupid to sell or trade land to the Winter Club. This club, being private, only has’ a minority of the people © belonging to it. Would it be fair to take land from the rest. ‘ of us? In the future, many people of the North Shore probably won’t be’ able to afford to belong to such clubs. If the council + were to take a survey I’m sure they would find. the majority of ‘people against selling or trading our land. I don’t think too many people enjoy living in a concrete city. Why don’t we -keep what we have now, instead of feeling sorry it's gone later?
