NORTH SHORE News photographer Ian - Smith took first place honors in the sports category of a newspa- per photography con- test. By BARRETT F Smith’s kayaking ‘picture. topped other sports entries from all over North America in the Suburban Newspaper Association’s photography contest. This is the second year in a row North Shore News has won the sports category for the SNA contest. Smith; who also won first prize in the features category in a British Columbia and Yukon Community News- paper Association photo contest earlier this year, has been with the News for six years. : The 34-year-old photographer was delighted with the award. Said Smith: “I'm honored. I’m always happy to be recognized for my photography work.** To get the picture of the kayakers in the rapids below the Capilano Dam in North Vancouver, Smith took off his shoes and socks, rolled up his pant legs and waded News photographer snaps a winner out to a group of rocks out- side the reach of the rapids. “T got myself in a position where I could have the kayakers come _ straight towards -me,’’ Smith said, ‘and also where the canyon walls provided’ a dark background for the waves, which were -sidelighted by the sun, so they, would be very visible.’’ — Smith is showing a collec- tion of his photographs at West Vancouver Memorial Library as part of an exhib- ition of personal works by North Shore News photographers.
