Head down to the mall, pick up a copy and a case and settle down near your ” stereo. Listening to the Hip hard at work. never sounded so good. Douglas at top of his game From Page 2% Their distinctive interpretations (of Lennon/MeCartney, BRacharach/David and Jacques Prevert, among others) bring out the intricacies of the tunes to maximum effeet. Denzal’s voice is set out in front of the ensemble like Nat King Cole singing over a chamber jazz ensemble. Sublime. SB xx xk Dave Douglas — Soul on Soul (RCA). Trumpeter Dave Douglas D.D. Jackson on RCA’s ros- ter and for his major label! debut he remembers the music of Mary Lou Williams, Her career spanned most of the century and embraced many Douglas first became interested in Williams work after hear- ing the 1945 recording Zodiac Suite and was struck by its post- modern esthetic. Sou! on Sout includes both Douglas composi- tions and new interpretations of Williams’ music. The ensemble put together for the sessions (Joe Baron — drums, Greg Tardy - tenor sax, Joshua Roseman - trombone, Uni Caine - piano, James Genus — bass and Douglas - trumpet) is at the top of their game. Recommended. @ xxx Louis Armstrong — West End Blues: The Very Best of the Hot Fives and Sevens (Music Club). Seminal jazz sides from [Louis Armstrong and cohorts repack- aged on the British budget label Music Club. A bit misleading as everything that Armstrong was doing at this time is worth listen- ing to and a “best of” is very subjective. Whar’s missing says a lor but what's here is definitely hor, including the tide wack “West End Blues”, reportedly Armstrong’s favourite recording of his own work. Liner notes by U.K journalist Fred Dellar add interesting background but you will have to go elsewhere for session date information.
