A message to youth: grow up Dear Editor: George Bernard Shaw quipped, “Nothing is so wasted on the vouny as youth.” Your writer Hana Mercer, in her piercing article, “Undermining the power of parenthood” (North Shore News, Jan. 2&) exposed causes and symptoms of family break- down and juvenile delinquency. , The United Nations assertion was a shocker, [ repeat i “The solution has been for the state to shift the balance in the arent-child relationship through policies that would detine and imit the power of the parent while increasing the power of the child.” : This is typical UN claptrap with its secret Marxist agenda. Following on Ms. Mercer's column came the reveladon on “Youth Crime” by the admirable ‘Ted White, MP (advertorial, North Shore News, Feb. 9). Our concerns here parallel those of like-minded Australians, Where a juvenile court: judge wrote an “open letter to teenagers” After the “alerts™ which your newspaper has provided us, I suggest You many care to repeat: “Always, we hear the plaintive ery of teenagers: “What can we do? Where can we go?” “The answer is: Go home. Wash the windows, paint the woodwork, rake the leaves, scrub some foors, repair the sink, wash the car, learn to cook, build a boat, get a job, visit the sick, assist the poor, study vour lessons and then when you are fin- ished — and not tired — read a book. “Your town does not owe you recreation facilities. “Your parents do not owe you entertainment. The world does not owe you 4 living. “You owe the world something. You owe it your time, ener- gy and talents, so that no one will be at war, or live in poverty or be sick or lonely again. “In plain simple words — grow up, stop being a crv baby, get out of vour dream world, develop a backbone, nut a wish- bone, start acting like a man or a woman. “What you are, God gave you. What you becume, vou give to God. Australia needs your help for survival. You are impor- tant and you are needed. it is too late to sit arsund and wait for somebody to do something some day. “Some day is now and somebody is you. You be extraordi- nary, or we die.” Russell C. I noticed a shift in the way tanning salons were being run,” says Kelly, “I found a better way of doing it; where the staff are knowledgeable and the facilities are more professional and clean. Dear Editor: TE teel compelled to write because my family has recently experienced first hand, the “crisis” in our health-care sys- tem. On a Friday afterneon, my father was admitted, via an ambulance, to the Lions Gate Hospital emergency ward, after having a suspected heart attack. The emergency staff and on-call doctors were excel- lent and attended to him quickly, connecting him to monizors, administering oxy- gen and processing blood tests, cle. AMl the results contirmed a mild heart attack had occurred. The recommendation was to admit hin: and continue moni- tormg. and testing over the next 24 to 48 hours. Little did we know that those hours would be spent right where he was —- in the emergency ward. This apparently was duc to a reduction of available beds and cal heal stalt. Needless to say, resting and relaxing were difficult at best, fying ina five foot bed (Dad is a staking 6°12") and watching the frantic comings and goings ofan emergency ward during a winter weekend. Finally, late on Saturday night, Pad was transferred “upstairs” and testing. contin- ued. Later, the question was raised as to whether he had suf: fered a heart attack at all, as we then found out that the equip- ment previously used was faulty and the results were inaccurate. At this point, | was wishing J had listened to my mother’s nagging and had become a dector! Further, they are not sure what caused my father’s svinp- toms in the fest place. Stress? Flu?
