As many as 10,000 North Shore residents may already have diabetes, and that num- ber is increasing due to the aging population and lifestyle choices such as poor dict and- lack of exercise. These surprising numbers are part of the reason for North Shore Health Region (NSHR) seeking ways of edu- cating the community to the signs and symptoms of dia- betés and how to deal with the disease. On Tuesday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m, the NSHR Diabetes Day Centre Team will hold a special health forum to high- light the latest information and breakthroughs in manag- ing diabetes. The. forum, held as part of. National Diabetes Awareness Month, will be take place in the Medical Day Centre at Lions Gate Haspitai in North Vancouver. The guest speaker is North Shore endocrinologist Dr. Susan Haigh. A panel of guests repre- senting a variety of health dis- ciplines such as nursing, dietary, pharmacy and coun- selling will participate in the forum. Haigh said that during the next decade, the incidence of diabetes will increase. As many as one in five Canadians over the age of 55 may devel- op diabetes by some predic: tions. “That is an enormous numlter and has the porential to become a significant cost in terms of both resources and human life,” said Haigh, “The ood news is, with proper education and early diagnosis, the risks of diabetes can be overcome.” Many people with diabetes are pot aware of it because they do not recognize the symptoms. Anyone with diabetes, at risk of developing | diabetes, or simply interested in the latest developments about how te manage it is encouraged to attend the forum. “This is an excellent opportunity to become more informed and have your ques- tions answered,” said Haigh.
