JULY 26 Kayakers compete | at | | Cheakamus| A MAJOR whitewater kayak and canoe competition will take place July 26 and 27 on the Cheakamus River, 20 kilometres south of Whistler. Hundreds of spectators are ex- pected to line the river bank for the 1986 Canadian National Whitewater Championships. Last held in B.C. in 1977, the nationals have been named an of- ficial Expo 86 transportation event. The races will be complemented by whitewater paddling demonstrations and displays at Expo, as well as a celebrity canoe race co-organized with Rick Hansen’s Man in Motion tour. The latter teams local celebrities from radio, television, music and sports with national team members. Ten of these unlikely duos —— two teams at a time —— will at- tempt to wind their way between buoys on Alta Lake that determine side-by-side slalom courses. A comical clothing change is part of the competition, which means canoe skills alone wili not determine the winner. Individuals interested in know- ing more about the whitewater races and accompanying events are encouraged to phone Canoe Sport British Columbia in Vancouver at 687-3333.
